38 National Public Lands Day projects across 23 different states were funded in 2010.
20 of these projects focused on pollinators!
Here are just a few examples of 2010 NPLD pollinator-related projects.
Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Patrick Air Force Base, Florida. This project seeks to improve pollinator habitat along Phillips Parkway and Central Control Road and to reintroduce Florida native wildflowers. Volunteers will prepare areas for seeding and spread native wildflower seed. In another part of the base, volunteers will remove the invasive plant Brazilian Pepper, and plant native vegetation along river shoreline to provide new natural habitat for birds and marine life.
McCrady Training Center, South Carolina. The proposed project will focus on bees, bats, butterflies, and hummingbirds and the role they play as pollinators in the sand-hills ecosystem. Volunteers will establish additional native vegetation and wildflowers to select pre-existing pollinator areas on our BG Harry J Vann Interpretive trail and the Palmetto trail.
Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, 29 Palms, California. The project involves the design and building the Cultural Heritage Interpretive Garden, to supplement the already existing Archeology and Paleontology Curation Center. This garden would give visitors the opportunity to learn how to identify native plants and understand how they were used by prehistoric peoples of the Mojave Desert. In addition, this native plant garden would act as a supplement to the nearby existing nectar garden, providing additional food and habitat for pollinator species. Volunteers will build retaining walls, plant native species and install small interpretive signs.
