Pollinator Habitat Restoration
for DoD Land Managers
The fifth National Pollinator Week was held June 19-25
June 19-25, 2011 marked the fifth annual National Pollinator Week. On June 24, the USDA People's Garden hosted an event to celebrate the importance of pollinators to agriculture and public land. DoD presented an exhibit to educate other agencies, organizations, and the public about the importance pollinators play to support the military mission. The exhibit also provided information on what the DoD Natural Resources Program does to help protect and restore pollinators and their habitats.
There were an overwhelming number of visitors that stopped by the DoD booth to learn about current initiatives. Nearly all of the people who inquired were fascinated and surprised that DoD even supported and promoted pollinators. Phases such as, "why is DoD here?" and "DoD is interested in pollinators?" were common expressions used by other agencies. Because of this event, other agencies and organizations were able to gain insight on other work the DoD Natural Resources Conservation Program is involved in and learn about some of the projects DoD supports regarding pollinators.
