DoD sponsored the Sustaining Military Readiness Conference (SMR), held August 9-14, 2009, in Phoenix, Arizona. The conference brought together DoD personnel and their stakeholders in readiness, sustainability, compatible land use, and conservation management to exchange lessons learned from the public and private sectors, share results of sustainability programs and projects, and participate in a broad spectrum of informative training workshops.
The DoD Natural Resources Conservation: Legacy Program funded the development of a pollinator poster entitled DoD: Partnering for Pollinators to display at a poster session during SMR. The poster highlighted the following:
Reasons pollinators are important
Why pollinators are important to DoD
Recent demonstration projects and events that support pollinators
Individual actions people can take to assist pollinators
Each section of the display referenced the importance of partnerships as a key theme. A continued need exists for new and expanded partnerships, for better coordination and development of conservation agreements, and for a greater focus on ecosystem level cooperation.
DoD will continue to highlight and promote the work of pollinators. Displays such as the DoD: Partnering for Pollinators poster will increase awareness that will help to promote pollinators and their overall wellbeing.
